Using mobile data in Thailand

Your eSIM connects to a local network in Thailand, so maps, messages, rides, and translation work like they do at home. Data roaming must be switched on for the eSIM line. That is normal for travel eSIMs and it does not cost extra.

Networks in most of Asia are fast and data is cheap by global standards. An eSIM saves you the airport SIM counter line after a long flight.

Mobile networks in Thailand

eSIM plans for Thailand connect through True and AIS, depending on the plan. 5G is available where the network has built it out. Elsewhere you get 4G.

True and AIS are two of Thailand's largest operators, and these plans reach the 5G they have rolled out across cities and tourist hubs, with 4G everywhere else. Coverage runs from Bangkok through Chiang Mai and down to the southern islands.

Popular islands like Phuket, Koh Samui, and Phi Phi are well served near the main beaches and towns. On boat crossings and the quieter parts of the islands, signal can dip.

City, beaches, and islands

A common route mixes Bangkok, the north, and a stretch of islands, and the connection holds up across all of it. A mid size plan covers maps and messaging, while the unlimited windows suit heavy streaming or long stays.

On ferries between islands, keep expectations low and download what you need in advance.

Apps and getting around

Grab is the main ride and delivery app in Thai cities, and LINE is the dominant messenger. Both run on data, though Grab may ask for an SMS code the first time you use it.

Your eSIM is data only with no Thai number, so keep your home SIM ready for that verification. After setup, everything runs on data.

Wi-Fi reality

Wi-Fi is common in hotels, cafés, and malls, so you can offload big downloads. Out and about, your mobile data carries maps, translation, and ride-hailing without trouble.

Islands, beaches, and where the signal goes

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Koh Samui all have fast coverage from the networks named above, with 5G live in built-up areas. Ferry crossings and smaller islands like Koh Lanta's quieter coasts can dip to slower service.

Signal on the islands clusters around towns and resorts. A beach bungalow at the far end of a bay may sit in a soft spot, so check maps and messages in town.

Apps and getting around

Grab handles rides and food delivery in Thai cities and runs on data. It can be set up on your home number before you fly, which sidesteps the local-number problem of a data-only eSIM.

QR payments are everywhere in Thailand, but they generally need a Thai bank account. Carry a card and some cash, and let the eSIM handle maps, translation, and messaging.
