Using mobile data in China
Your eSIM connects to a local network in China, so maps, messages, rides, and translation work like they do at home. Data roaming must be switched on for the eSIM line. That is normal for travel eSIMs and it does not cost extra.
Networks in most of Asia are fast and data is cheap by global standards. An eSIM saves you the airport SIM counter line after a long flight.
Mobile networks in China
eSIM plans for China connect through China Unicom. 5G is available where the network has built it out. Elsewhere you get 4G.
China Unicom is one of the country's three big state operators, and your eSIM connects through its network with 5G where it has been built out. That means fast data in the major cities and 4G in most other places.
One thing sets a travel eSIM apart in China. Because it routes through a foreign gateway, many apps that are normally blocked inside the country tend to work as they would at home, which helps with maps and search.

Apps you will actually use
WeChat runs everything in China, from messaging to paying for things, and it is worth setting up before you arrive. Alipay is the other big payment app.
Mobile payments dominate, so many places do not expect cash. Link a card to WeChat or Alipay ahead of time, since setup often needs verification you cannot do easily on the ground.
Coverage from cities to countryside
Beijing, Shanghai, and the other big cities have dense, fast coverage. High-speed trains and rural areas still get service, though speeds vary.
For remote regions like the far west or high plateaus, expect thinner data. Download maps and translations before you go.
Sizing your data
Maps, translation apps, and messaging use modest data. A mid-size plan covers a typical week of sightseeing.
If you stream video or make frequent video calls home, lean toward the larger monthly buckets or a short unlimited window.
The firewall question, answered plainly
Travel eSIMs for China route data through international gateways. In practice that means Google Maps, Gmail, WhatsApp, and Instagram usually work on this eSIM without a separate VPN, which is the single biggest reason travelers pick an eSIM for China over a local SIM.
Hotel and cafe Wi-Fi sits behind the firewall, so keep the eSIM as your default data line when you need your usual apps.
Payments, trains, and daily life on data
Alipay and WeChat Pay dominate payment in China and both accept foreign cards now. They run on data, so a working connection is what makes day-to-day spending possible.
High-speed rail between major cities keeps a usable signal for most of the ride. Remote western regions and mountain areas are where coverage thins.
