Borders are real borders here

Unlike Europe, most Asian borders involve a flight or a formal land crossing, and each country runs its own networks with no shared roaming zone. That is exactly the situation a regional plan is built for. One eSIM covers the hop from Bangkok to Singapore to Tokyo without a new install at each stop.

Mainland China is the special case. Some regional plans route Chinese data through networks that are not behind the usual filtering, and some do not include mainland China at all. Check the country list on the plan before you rely on it there, and note that Hong Kong and Macau count as separate coverage areas from the mainland.

Where coverage thins out

Cities across East and Southeast Asia are among the best-connected places anywhere, with 5G widespread in Japan, South Korea, and the big Chinese cities. The thin spots are the Himalayan regions of Nepal and northern India, the outer islands of Indonesia and the Philippines, and rural Central Asia.

Island-hopping trips in Thailand, Indonesia, or the Philippines involve boat legs where signal drops between islands. Download maps and tickets before the pier, not on the boat.

Regional plan or per-country plans?

The classic Southeast Asia loop of three or more countries in a few weeks is the strongest case for a regional plan. One data pool follows you through every airport.

A trip that stays inside one country, like two weeks in Japan or a month in Thailand, is better served by that country's own plan. It usually carries more data for the same money.
