Using mobile data in India

Your eSIM connects to a local network in India, so maps, messages, rides, and translation work like they do at home. Data roaming must be switched on for the eSIM line. That is normal for travel eSIMs and it does not cost extra.

Networks in most of Asia are fast and data is cheap by global standards. An eSIM saves you the airport SIM counter line after a long flight.

Mobile networks in India

eSIM plans for India connect through Jio. Service is 4G LTE. Speeds are fine for maps, messaging, and video calls.

Jio is India's largest mobile operator by subscribers and the network in the catalog. It is listed as LTE here, so expect 4G data. Jio built a nationwide 4G footprint from the ground up, which gives it strong reach across cities, towns, and many rural areas.

Speeds are fine for maps, messaging, and video calls. In dense city centers at peak times, data can slow under heavy load.

Sizing a plan for a big country

India rewards a larger plan if you are covering ground, since you will use maps, translation, and ride apps daily. A short single-city visit can work on a smaller plan.

The unlimited-by-day plans suit travelers who stream on trains or hotspot a laptop while moving between cities.

Apps and the data-only caveat

WhatsApp is used everywhere in India for messaging and calls, and it runs on data. Many local apps for rides and payments want an Indian number for SMS codes, which this data-only eSIM does not provide.

Keep your home number active for those verifications, and lean on WhatsApp and maps for daily travel.

Coverage across India, city by city

Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and other large cities have dense 4G coverage, and an eSIM for India works there as reliably as your phone at home. The Golden Triangle route between Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur stays covered the whole way, including on trains between them.

Signal thins in the Himalayan foothills, in national parks, and on rural stretches between smaller towns. Download offline maps before overnight trains or long drives so navigation keeps working through gaps.

A travel eSIM compared with a local Indian SIM

Buying a local SIM in India requires your passport, a visa copy, and often a local reference, and activation can take a day. A travel eSIM skips all of that. It is installed before you fly and it works on arrival.

The trade is that a travel eSIM is data only, with no Indian phone number. If an app insists on an Indian number for sign-up, that limit applies no matter which travel eSIM brand you buy.

Hotspots, trains, and daily data use

Tethering a laptop or tablet from the eSIM line works on these plans, which helps on long train rides and in hotels with weak Wi-Fi.

Expect to use more data in India than on a typical trip. Maps, translation, ride apps, and QR payments all run through your phone here, so a bigger plan or an unlimited-by-day option earns its keep on stays over a week.
