Using mobile data in Japan

Your eSIM connects to a local network in Japan, so maps, messages, rides, and translation work like they do at home. Data roaming must be switched on for the eSIM line. That is normal for travel eSIMs and it does not cost extra.

Networks in most of Asia are fast and data is cheap by global standards. An eSIM saves you the airport SIM counter line after a long flight.

Mobile networks in Japan

eSIM plans for Japan connect through Softbank and KDDI, depending on the plan. 5G is available where the network has built it out. Elsewhere you get 4G.

Two of Japan's big carriers serve you here, SoftBank and KDDI, both on 5G. These are among the country's largest operators, and their networks reach across the cities, the shinkansen routes, and most populated areas with fast data.

Coverage is dense and dependable, including in subway systems and tunnels. In the deep mountains and on remote islands, data can thin.

A tiny plan for a quick stop

Japan's plan list starts with a very small option, which fits a short layover or a single day of maps and messaging. Most travelers exploring cities want more headroom.

For a one- or two-week trip with heavy map and translation use, pick a larger monthly plan or an unlimited-by-day plan.

Apps and getting around

LINE is the dominant messaging app in Japan, and it runs on data. Translation and transit apps get constant use as you navigate stations and menus.

This eSIM is data only, so keep any SMS verification on your home number. Station and train coverage is strong, so live transit apps work while you move.

Connectivity on the Shinkansen and in the metro

Both networks named above hold a signal on the Shinkansen between Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, with short drops in tunnels. Tokyo's metro has coverage underground, so navigation keeps working between stations.

Rural onsen towns, mountain trails, and parts of Hokkaido have thinner coverage. Download offline maps before day hikes.

Apps that carry a Japan trip

Google Maps handles Japanese transit timetables well, and a translation app with the camera feature earns its place at every menu. Both live on data.

IC transit cards like Suica sit in your phone wallet and top up over data, which is another quiet reason to keep the eSIM line healthy.
