Using mobile data in Vietnam
Your eSIM connects to a local network in Vietnam, so maps, messages, rides, and translation work like they do at home. Data roaming must be switched on for the eSIM line. That is normal for travel eSIMs and it does not cost extra.
Networks in most of Asia are fast and data is cheap by global standards. An eSIM saves you the airport SIM counter line after a long flight.
Mobile networks in Vietnam
eSIM plans for Vietnam connect through VNPT. 5G is available where the network has built it out. Elsewhere you get 4G.
VNPT is a major state linked operator, known locally for the VinaPhone brand, and these plans use its 5G where it has launched, with 4G elsewhere. Coverage runs from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City through the coastal towns and up into the northern highlands.
Cities and main routes have fast, dependable data. In the far mountain areas around Sapa and Ha Giang and out on the islands, expect some gaps.

The length of Vietnam
Many trips run the length of the country from north to south, and data holds up well in the cities and along the main corridor. A mid size plan covers maps and messaging, while the unlimited windows suit heavier use.
For a Ha Long Bay cruise or a remote motorbike loop, download offline maps in advance where the signal thins out.
Apps and getting around
Grab is the main ride and delivery app in Vietnamese cities and runs on data, though it may ask for an SMS code on first sign in. Zalo is the dominant local messenger, alongside WhatsApp and Messenger.
The eSIM is data only with no Vietnamese number, so keep your home SIM ready for that verification text.
