Using mobile data in Taiwan
Your eSIM connects to a local network in Taiwan, so maps, messages, rides, and translation work like they do at home. Data roaming must be switched on for the eSIM line. That is normal for travel eSIMs and it does not cost extra.
Networks in most of Asia are fast and data is cheap by global standards. An eSIM saves you the airport SIM counter line after a long flight.
Mobile networks in Taiwan
eSIM plans for Taiwan connect through Taiwan Mobile. 5G is available where the network has built it out. Elsewhere you get 4G.
Taiwan Mobile is one of the island's major operators and these plans use its 5G where it reaches, backed by dense 4G elsewhere. Taiwan is one of the more thoroughly connected places you can travel, with coverage running from Taipei down to Kaohsiung and around the coast.
Even the mountain roads and the east coast, which are less populated, generally hold a usable signal. The high central peaks are where you should expect data to fade.

A heavily online island
Taiwan leans on apps for maps, the metro, food ordering, and payments, so a purely light plan can feel tight. A mid size plan suits a week of city travel, more if you stream on the high speed rail.
LINE is the dominant messaging app here, used for everything from friends to businesses. It runs on data like any other app.
Wi-Fi and getting around
Free Wi-Fi is widespread in stations, convenience stores, and cafés, so heavy downloads have somewhere to land. Your mobile data keeps maps and messaging alive between those spots.
The eSIM carries data only and has no Taiwanese number, so use your home SIM for text verification when a service needs it.
