Using mobile data in Nepal

Your eSIM connects to a local network in Nepal, so maps, messages, rides, and translation work like they do at home. Data roaming must be switched on for the eSIM line. That is normal for travel eSIMs and it does not cost extra.

Networks in most of Asia are fast and data is cheap by global standards. An eSIM saves you the airport SIM counter line after a long flight.

Mobile networks in Nepal

eSIM plans for Nepal connect through Ncell. Service is 4G LTE. Speeds are fine for maps, messaging, and video calls.

Ncell is one of Nepal's two major operators and carries your data on LTE. Coverage is strong across Kathmandu, Pokhara, and the towns in the lowlands and mid-hills. As you climb toward the high Himalaya, signal follows the trekking villages and then thins out, so expect quiet zones on the higher passes.

Data for trekking country

Plans span light weekly sizes, larger monthly buckets, and unlimited windows of a few days.

For a trek, a longer-dated plan makes sense since you may be out for a week or more. Many teahouses on popular routes have coverage, but do not count on it above the tree line.

Apps and connectivity

WhatsApp and Viber are both widely used for messaging in Nepal, so set them up before you arrive.

This eSIM gives data only and no Nepali number. Download offline maps of your trekking route before you leave Kathmandu or Pokhara.
