Using mobile data in Australia

Mobile networks in Australia

Optus is Australia's second largest mobile network and is owned by Singtel. Telstra is the largest and has the widest geographic reach. Vodafone, run by TPG, is the third, and since a 2025 network-sharing deal it runs on more than two thousand Optus sites in regional Australia, which lifted its population coverage to around 98.4%.

Optus is the speed leader and has been for years. Opensignal's May 2026 Australia report measured Optus's average 5G download speed at 199.9 Mbps, against 171.7 Mbps for Telstra and 161.8 Mbps for Vodafone. That is Optus's tenth consecutive win in that category. Worth noting honestly: it is also the lowest 5G figure Opensignal has recorded for Optus since it started reporting the metric in 2022.

Optus says its network reaches 98.5% of the Australian population. Telstra still wins Opensignal's Coverage Experience award, and has done for six reports in a row, because it covers more ground. Population coverage and land coverage are very different numbers in a country this empty, and the difference is the whole story of an Australian road trip.

Australia has switched off 3G

Telstra closed its 3G network on 30 June 2024 and Optus followed on 28 October 2024. Vodafone had already gone.

Two things follow. A 3G-only phone gets nothing in Australia. And regional users reported patchier signal after those shutdowns, which is one more reason to plan an inland drive around not having data rather than hoping for it.

The bands your phone needs

Optus 4G runs on 700, 900, 1800, 2100, 2300 and 2600 MHz, and its 5G runs on n78 at 3.5 GHz.

The one to check is band 28 at 700 MHz. That is the long-range layer covering highways and regional towns, and phones sold in North America often leave it out. Without band 28 you will hold a signal in Sydney and lose it well before you reach anywhere interesting.

Distance is the coverage story

Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the east coast run have fast, steady data, with 5G across the cities and larger regional centres.

Inland is a different country. The Nullarbor, the Stuart Highway between Coober Pedy and Alice Springs, the Gibb River Road and most of the Red Centre away from the highway have no coverage on any network. Mobile signal in Australia clusters around towns, and between towns there is nothing. Download maps and music before you leave the last town, and tell someone your route, which is what locals do.

Sizing a plan for Australian distances

Driving hours are long here, so navigation and streaming burn through data faster than a European city break of the same number of days.

Size the plan to your driving hours rather than your day count. A fortnight of Sydney and Melbourne uses far less than a fortnight of the Great Ocean Road and the Red Centre.
