Cellular models of the standard iPad support eSIM from the 7th generation (2019) onward — that covers the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th generations and the current model. The 6th generation and earlier predate eSIM.

A cellular iPad can feed your laptop or phone over hotspot; it draws from the plan allowance.

5G From the 10th generation (2022) onward; earlier cellular models are LTE

Where the local network offers 5G, the travel eSIM can use it; LTE-only models still work everywhere.

Which standard iPads qualify

Wi-Fi + Cellular versions of the iPad 7th generation (2019) and everything after it. These generations take a nano-SIM or an eSIM; the 10th generation kept both options.

The newest standard iPad follows Apple's move toward trayless cellular models; if yours has no SIM tray, eSIM is simply the only path, which changes nothing about how a travel eSIM works.

Wi-Fi-only iPads cannot use any SIM. If Settings shows a Cellular Data section, yours is cellular.

iPad-specific checks

iPads have no dial pad, so instead of *#06#: Settings, Cellular Data, then look for Add eSIM or Add a New Plan.

The standard iPad is the line most often bought through carriers and schools, so a lock is more likely here than on other iPads — confirm it is unlocked before buying a plan. Mainland-China cellular iPads may lack eSIM.

Installing your travel eSIM
