iPad mini eSIM support

Cellular iPad minis from the 5th generation (2019) onward support eSIM — the 5th generation, 6th generation (2021), and the current mini (2024). The 2024 mini dropped the SIM tray on cellular models, so it is eSIM-only. Minis older than the 5th generation predate eSIM.

5G From the mini 6 (2021) onward; the mini 5 is LTE

Where the local network offers 5G, the travel eSIM can use it; LTE-only models still work everywhere.

Which minis qualify

Wi-Fi + Cellular versions of the iPad mini 5 (2019), mini 6 (2021), and the 2024 mini. The mini 5 and 6 take a nano-SIM or an eSIM; the 2024 model is eSIM-only.

The mini is the iPad most likely to actually leave the house, which makes it the most natural fit in the lineup for a travel eSIM: pocketable, data-only, and no phone line to think about.

Wi-Fi-only minis cannot use any SIM. Settings showing a Cellular Data section means yours is cellular.

iPad-specific checks

No dial pad, so no *#06# — use Settings, Cellular Data, and look for Add eSIM or Add a New Plan.

Carrier-sold minis can be locked, and mainland-China cellular models may lack eSIM. Confirm both on an imported or carrier device before buying a plan.
