iPad eSIM compatibility and setup
Cellular iPads released from late 2018 onward support eSIM. Wi-Fi-only iPads do not — they have no cellular hardware at all. Travel eSIMs are data-only, which is exactly what an iPad needs.
Which iPads support eSIM
The Wi-Fi + Cellular versions of: iPad Pro 11-inch (all generations), iPad Pro 12.9-inch from the 3rd generation (2018) onward, iPad Air from the 3rd generation onward, iPad from the 7th generation onward, and iPad mini from the 5th generation onward.
A Wi-Fi-only iPad cannot use any SIM, physical or eSIM. To check which you have: if Settings shows a Cellular Data section, it is a cellular model.
Like iPhones, cellular iPads sold in mainland China may not have eSIM. Run the check below if yours came from there.
Check in 30 seconds
Open Settings, then Cellular Data. If you see Add eSIM or Add a New Plan, your iPad supports eSIM.
iPads bought through a carrier can be carrier-locked, just like phones. A locked iPad refuses other eSIMs.
How to install an eSIMion eSIM on an iPad
Your eSIM arrives by email with three ways to install.
Easiest: open the email on the iPad and tap the install link.
QR code: go to Settings, Cellular Data, Add eSIM, Use QR Code, and scan the code from the email on another screen.
Manual: choose Enter Details Manually and paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the email.
The install code works once. If an install fails partway, use the retry option on your install page or email support@esimion.com.
After the install
Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line in Settings, Cellular Data. That is the whole setup — an iPad has no phone line to juggle, so there is no dual-SIM step.
One eSIM covers one device. If you want data on both your phone and your iPad, each needs its own plan.
