Cross-border trips
Road trips across the USA–Canada border, like Seattle to Vancouver or the Niagara Falls loop, and USA–Mexico trips are where a regional plan earns its keep. Your data keeps working on both sides of the crossing with nothing to switch.
Near the border itself, phones sometimes latch onto a tower from the other country before you cross. With a regional plan covering both countries that is harmless. It only costs money when your home SIM does it, so keep data roaming off on that line.
Where coverage thins out
Cities and interstates in all three countries have fast data, and 5G is widespread in metro areas. The gaps are the spaces in between. Rural mountain west in the USA, northern Canada, and long empty stretches of highway in Mexico's interior can all go quiet for an hour of driving.
National parks are the classic dead zones. Yellowstone, Banff, and similar parks have signal near visitor centers and little elsewhere. Download offline maps before the park entrance, not after.
