Using mobile data in Germany

The big cities have dense, fast data for maps, transit apps, and messaging. Coverage holds along the autobahn and through most of the countryside.

In the Bavarian Alps and remote forest areas, expect 4G rather than 5G and the occasional gap. Download maps for mountain days.

Data amounts

A city break fits a small plan for maps and photos. A longer trip or heavy streaming suits the larger buckets or an unlimited window.

WhatsApp is the default messaging app in Germany, and it runs fine on a data-only eSIM.
