iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR eSIM support
Yes — the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR all support eSIM. They were the first iPhones to get it, in late 2018. The one generation-specific limit: they can store several eSIMs but only use one at a time, alongside the physical SIM.

What this generation can do
All three models — XS, XS Max, and XR — take one physical nano-SIM plus eSIMs. You can keep multiple eSIMs stored on the phone, but only one eSIM can be active at a time. For a normal trip that is exactly what you need: home SIM in the tray, travel eSIM active for data.
The limit shows up on multi-leg trips with more than one travel eSIM: you switch between stored eSIMs in Settings rather than running two at once. Switching takes a few taps and does not delete anything.
Models sold in mainland China shipped without eSIM (China-market XS Max and XR use two physical SIMs instead). If your phone came from mainland China, dial *#06# — an EID line means eSIM is there, no EID line means it is not.
Settings wording on this generation
These phones launched before Apple renamed the menus, so depending on your iOS version the option appears as Add Cellular Plan rather than Add eSIM. Both are the same thing: Settings, Cellular, then Add Cellular Plan or Add eSIM.
A carrier-locked phone refuses any other SIM, including eSIMs. Phones this age are usually long paid off, so if yours is still locked, the carrier will normally unlock it on request.
